A Carmichael man was killed and his wife was injured Sunday evening when they were hit by a suspected drunken driver as they were crossing Fair Oaks Boulevard near Kenneth Avenue.

Donald Hendrickson, 79, of Carmichael was pronounced dead Sunday at Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Valerie Hendrickson, 76, was listed in critical condition at the same hospital.

James Carroll, 55, of Carmichael was arrested Sunday and booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI causing injuries. He was released Tuesday from Sacramento County Jail.

The accident happened at 5:12 p.m. Carroll was driving his 2012 Toyota Camry on westbound Kenneth Avenue and stopped at the Fair Oaks Boulevard intersection. He then made a left turn onto the two-way left turn lane on southbound Fair Oaks Boulevard. He apparently did not see the Hendricksons, who were crossing Fair Oaks Boulevard from the west side, and hit them.

Both pedestrians suffered major head injuries. Carroll was arrested at the scene.
