A man suffered critical injuries early this morning in a fire inside a duplex in Carmichael.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Crews responded at about 1:30 a.m. to a report of heavy black smoke billowing from a duplex in the 1600 block of Safari Court, officials said. While searching the residence, they found a man, pulled him from the building and delivered him to paramedics.
The unidentified victim was transported to Kaiser Hospital in critical condition.
More than two dozen firefighters responded to the incident, and arson investigators were called to the scene. The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
The duplex where the fire occurred had no working smoke alarms, officials said. They urged people to test smoke alarms and replace batteries every six months.
