The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has identified the second victim who was fatally wounded in a south Sacramento shootout as 21-year-old Tre Howard.

Howard and 25-year-old Sheldon Smith died after two groups exchanged gunfire outside a home on Ventura Street the night of Dec. 17. A third man also was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, Smith and the injured victim were standing with another person in the driveway of the Ventura Street home when a car pulled up. Two men got out of the car and fired, striking Smith and a 24-year-old man. At least one person in the driveway returned fire, striking Howard.

The car sped from the scene, located just south of the now-shuttered Collis P. Huntington Elementary School. Howard and Smith were pronounced dead at the scene. The third victim later arrived at a local hospital and was determined to have been at the Ventura Street shooting.

Police have not made any arrests.
