Driver dies in Galt crash; DUI suspected

Authorities said a drunken driver crashed into a phone pole in Galt early Sunday morning, killing himself and injuring his passenger.
The driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a man in his 20s from the Galt area, according to Sgt. Chris Smith of Galt police. His passenger, also a Galt-area male in his 20s, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The crash occured about 3:35 a.m. Galt police got several 911 calls about an accident across from Valley Oaks Elementary School,, where officers found a 2000 Toyota Echo crashed into a pole. Inside they found the driver was not wearing a seat belt,and the unconscious passenger, who was taken to an area hospital. He had been wearing a seat belt.
