Sacramento police are investigating an early morning traffic collision that resulted in two fatalities.
Shortly after 1:30 a.m., a car was traveling southbound on Howe Avenue, apparently at a high rate of speed, when it struck a tree in the center divider, just south of American River Drive, authorities said.
“When the car struck a tree, the two occupants became ejected and suffered fatal injuries,” said Officer Doug Morse, police spokesman. The identities of the two persons killed were not released.
When officers arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Traffic was diverted around the immediate scene until 6 a.m., when roads were reopened.
