A 31-year-old man has died of injuries suffered on Interstate 5 on Feb. 14 when a wheel from a trailer crashed through the windshield of his vehicle.

Kyle Hubbard died Saturday night, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. Although Hubbard was listed as a resident of Palm Desert, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Michael Bradley said he may have recently moved the Sacramento area. Bradley said a 30-year-old woman who was a passenger in Hubbard’s 2005 Ford Taurus at the time of the accident had an Elk Grove address and told officers that the two were on their way to work.

The accident occurred about 9:20 a.m. as Hubbard was driving northbound on Interstate 5, south of Sutterville Road. A wheel came off a southbound trailer carrying a prefabricated house, flew across the freeway median and through the windshield of Hubbard’s vehicle. Bradley said Hubbard suffered major head trauma and was transported to UC Davis Medical Center. He said Hubbard’s passenger was not injured.

Bradley said the truck and trailer were owned by Ernie’s Mobile Home Transport of Oliverhurst. The trailer had five axles, and a wheel apparently came off the rear axle on the passenger side, he said.

Bradley said the accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed against the truck driver pending the outcome of the vehicle inspection.
