A Saturday statewide undercover operation resulted in 536 arrests or citations of adults suspected of buying booze for minors.

The so-called “shoulder tap” alcohol decoy operation resulted in 26 cited or arrested in Sacramento County, including Rancho Cordova, Folsom and the City of Sacramento.

Other citations or arrests occurred in West Sacramento 1, Placer County, 19, Nevada County, 12, and El Dorado County, 7.

Under the program, an underage person working under the supervision of a peace officer stands outside a liquor or convenience store and asks store customers to buy them alcohol. The minor tells the adult that he or she is underage and cannot buy the alcohol.

If adults buy the booze for the minor, then officers arrest and cite them. The penalty for furnishing alcohol to a minor is a minimum $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service, according to Folsom Police.
