A fourth person shot in the spate of gun violence in Sacramento County last weekend has died, according to police.
That brings to four the total number of people who died in the violence, which was primarily concentrated in the city and county’s south end. All told, 18 people were shot in 11 incidents between Friday and Sunday nights. Authorities have said they do not believe any of the incidents are related.
The frequency of shootings during such a short period of time is unusual for Sacramento. However, the city has seen an 18 percent increase in shootings between Jan. 1 and March 18 compared to the same period last year, according to the Police Department.
The Sheriff’s Department reported a 17 percent decrease in shootings when comparing the same time periods.
The latest homicide victim, a 19-year-old woman, was shot one time in the face about 12:40 a.m. Saturday in the 7200 block of Gloria Drive, in the city’s Pocket neighborhood. She died Monday night, said police spokeswoman Officer Michele Gigante. The woman’s name has not been released, pending notification of her family.
Gigante said earlier this week that the shooting followed an altercation between the victim and a person known to her. Detectives do not believe the attack was random, she said. No arrests have been made.
At least three of the 11 incidents are being investigated as gang-related, according to police. Otherwise, officials from the police and sheriff’s departments say the only commonality is that most of them were drive-by shootings.
The Police Department’s Cops and Clergy program – an outreach effort targeting street violence – and DeAngelo Mack, coordinator of the Sacramento Violence Intervention Program, have organized a Friday night walk to raise awareness about the recent violence. Anyone who wants to participate should meet in the parking lot of the Evergreen shopping center at the corner of Mack Road and Center Parkway, at 8:30 p.m.
Two of last weekend’s shootings occurred a half-mile from that location.
