A Yolo County jail inmate has died after being found hanging from a light fixture in his cell.
Nitesh Raj Singh, 33, of West Sacramento had been incarcerated since March 6 on suspicion of domestic violence. He was housed by himself in a cell Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. when a correctional officer at the Yolo County Monroe Center conducting routine checks found him attempting to commit suicide.
The officer called for assistance and entered the cell. Singh had a sheet wrapped around his neck and the other end tied to a cell light fixture.
Correctional and medical personnel began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Fire department and ambulance personnel were called and Singh was transported to Woodland Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Singh had been observed by jail staff only 25 minutes before he was found hanging. He appeared well and was not displaying signs of distress, according to the Yolo County Sheriff’s Department.
