California Highway Patrol officers shot a man who they said pointed an assault weapon at them Thursday night in Arden Arcade.
The man, who was not identified, is in critical but stable condition. No officers were hurt in the incident.
The CHP reported about 11:30 p.m. Thursday that officers had been involved in a shooting while investigating a vehicle theft call in the 1500 block of Howe Avenue, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department press release.
CHP officers were outside their vehicles checking a truck parked in the parking lot of a business when a man approached carrying an assault rifle. When officers ordered him to drop the weapon, he instead pointed the muzzle of the rifle at them.
That forced the officers to shoot the man, according to the release. The man was transported to the hospital.
Investigation into the incident will be conducted by the sheriff’s department.
