Minor injuries were reported in a low-speed crash involving a school bus Friday morning in Citrus Heights.

The rear-end collision occurred about 9:50 a.m. at Greenback Lane and Mariposa Avenue. About 62 students were aboard San Juan Unified School District bus, according to Capt. Michelle Eidam, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokeswoman.

The bus was rear-ended by a vehicle at an estimated 10 to 15 mph, Eidam said. In addition to students and the driver, two teachers and two parents were on the bus.

The California Highway Patrol reported that 26 students complained pain or injury. A total of 15 children were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, while 11 were released to seek aid on their own.

The students transported to the hospital had injuries such as bumps and bruises, according to a school district spokesman.

Eidam said the students were on a field trip from Arlington Heights School to San Juan High School for a “Nutritional Decathlon.”

According to the CHP, the school bus was southbound on Mariposa Avenue and was stopped for a red light at the Greenback Lane intersection. The light turned green and the bus driver, a 55-year-old man, began to make a right turn onto westbound Greenback. The bus driver saw a pedestrian crossing in the crosswalk on Greenback Lane, applied the brakes of the bus and stopped.

A gold 2013 Mercedes SUV, driven by a 57-year-old Citrus Heights woman, was behind the bus, also stopped for the red light. When the light changed, she began to proceed forward as the bus did. When the bus stopped, the SUV driver attempted to apply her brakes but mistakenly pressed the accelerator.

The front of the SUV struck the rear of the bus.

Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have contributed to the crash, which is still under investigation, according to the CHP.
