Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies found an inmate dead in his jail cell about 10 a.m. Sunday, the apparent victim of a suicide, authorities said.
The 35-year-old man apparently hanged himself with a blanket, Sgt. Lisa Bowman said.
The inmate had been placed in a total isolation unit, which means that deputies checked on him hourly, but he was not on suicide watch, Bowman said. He was last seen alive at 9:04 a.m., she said.
The inmate’s name was being withheld until family members could be notified, Bowman said. He had been in the jail since June 9, 2013, and was awaiting trial on a number of felony charges, included attempted murder, child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon, she said.
Bowman, a sheriff’s spokeswoman, said the death was under investigation.
