Jury selection is scheduled to begin Wednesday in the murder trial of four men accused of killing a woman who used her body to protect her 2-year-old son during a 2010 shootout at a south Sacramento barbershop.

Defendants Lonnie Orlando Mitchell Jr., 27, Louis James Mitchell, 22, Larry Dean Jones Jr., 32, and James Leo Carney III, 34, have been charged in the Dec. 14, 2010, shooting death of Monique Nelson, 30, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet in the parking lot of Fly Cuts & Styles on Stockton Boulevard.

Two other men who were charged in the case, Charles Barksdale and Dominique Marcell Lott, pleaded guilty last year to voluntary manslaughter and were sentenced to 21 years in prison.

The trial will be heard in front of Sacramento Superior Court Judge Kevin J. McCormick. Jury selection is expected to last at least two weeks before the prosecution and defense attorneys deliver their opening statements.

A second person, Marvion Barksdale, 20, also was killed during the shootout, but no charges were filed in his death. Authorities said Marvion Barksdale led the raid on the barbershop that prompted the shootings.
