A man who died Friday night after he was shot by Citrus Heights police has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as 42-year-old Jason Wilson of Carmichael.

Police said that Wilson, an assault suspect, refused to comply with officers’ orders when they found him following a foot pursuit, and officers fired when Wilson was reached into his waistband.

About 9:55 p.m., officers responded to the area of Woodmore Oaks Drive and Sunrise Boulevard after receiving 911 calls from witnesses reporting that a man was assaulting a woman. Police dispatchers reported the suspect could be heard in the background making threats to kill the woman, according to a Police Department news release.

When officers arrived, the man fled on a bicycle. Officers chased him through a large parking lot until he dropped his bicycle and continued on foot. He fled through a neighboring residential area into an open field next to a school.

A law enforcement helicopter crew spotted the suspect running onto the school campus, where officers located him in a confined area. Police said “the suspect’s violent and irrational behavior throughout the incident” led officers to believe they were in imminent danger when the man reached into his waistband. Police spokesman Lt. Ryan Kinnan on Tuesday declined to say whether a weapon was found pending completion of the department’s investigation.

Emergency medical aid was administered at the scene and Wilson was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
