Four cyclists were hit by cars in Sacramento over the weekend, including one who police said was deliberately attacked after an argument with a motorist.

On Saturday, Wesley Cuong Tran, 31, hit three bicyclists in midtown, police said. He first caught law enforcement attention around 11 p.m., when a police officer at 21st Street near L Street spotted a vehicle speeding south – the wrong way – on 21st Street. The car then turned west on L Street and apparently tried to go south on 20th Street when it hit two bicyclists, injuring one.

After stopping the vehicle, police learned that the driver, Tran, had argued with another bicyclist. Police said Tran told officers the bicyclist used a knife to puncture one of Tran’s tires and left.

Police said their investigation showed that Tran changed his damaged tire and went looking for the bicyclist. According to police, Tran found the man and intentionally hit him with his car, leaving the bicyclist with a head injury. Police did not disclose where that collision took place but said Tran apparently was fleeing when he lost control of his car and hit the other two bicyclists. One had minor injuries, and the second was not hurt.

Tran was arrested at the scene and was being held at the Sacramento County jail on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and DUI. His bond was set at $60,000. It was not clear Sunday whether the bicyclist who Tran said punctured his tire will be facing charges. Police did not disclose the names, ages or genders of the bicyclists hit in midtown.

Tran is a teacher at the Yolo Education Center, an official with the school confirmed on Monday.

Early Sunday, a bicyclist was struck by a hit-and-run driver near Woodbine Park.

Police responded around 4 a.m. in the 6800 block of 24th Street. Officers found that a bicyclist, described as a woman in her 40s, had suffered serious injuries. She was taken to a hospital.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that a vehicle southbound on 24th Street hit the woman, who was traveling in the southbound bicycle lane. The vehicle, described as a dark-colored SUV, left the scene.
