An officer fatally shot a man who drew a knife on him Thursday morning in Del Paso Heights, according to a Sacramento police spokesman.

About 4 a.m., two officers in a squad car were on a routine patrol near Marysville Boulevard and Harris Avenue when they tried to speak with a man on foot. The officers soon realized that the man was wanted on outstanding warrants, including one for possession of teargas by a convicted felon.

The man failed to respond to officers’ commands and took off running, police said. The officers chased him through an alley just east of Marysville Boulevard.

“During the foot pursuit that individual produced a knife in close proximity to the officers,” said Officer Doug Morse, police spokesman.

Fearing for their safety, one officer discharged his weapon, striking the man in the upper body. Medical aid was summoned, and additional officers responded and provided aid until medics arrived. The man died at the scene.

The officers were not injured.

The suspect’s name has not been released pending completion of the Sacramento County Coroner’s investigation.

The Police Department’s Homicide, Internal Affairs and Crime Scene Investigations units are working on the investigation in conjunction with the city’s Office of Public Safety Accountability, according to a department news release. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office also will review the investigation.
