A firefighting veteran has been selected as the new fire chief for the City of Sacamento.
Walt White, currently an assistant chief with Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, will assume the top job with Sacramento Fire Department on July 2. His annual salary will be $203,000.
He will lead the 656-employee department, which has a $95 million budget. White replaces Ray Jones, who announced his retirement last year.
White began as a firefighter with the American River Fire Department. In 2000 American River Fire Department and Sacramento County Fire Protection District merged to form the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
White worked his way up the ranks to Assistant Fire Chief in 2010.
