A group of juveniles detained at the 13th Street light-rail station for fare evasion assaulted a police officer Monday night, authorities say.
The Sacramento Police Department officer came to the scene around 7:45 p.m. to assist Regional Transit security guards who were citing five juveniles as suspected fare evaders. One refused to leave and was detained for trespassing.
The others then challenged the police officer to a fight. He called for backup and the four walked away, but one hurled a piece of asphalt block in his direction. It hit the patrol vehicle and the officer’s face, according to a police activity report.
The four suspects then fled. Of the five originally involved, four were ultimately detained, arrested and transported to juvenile hall. They were charged with participation in a criminal street gang, among other charges.
