The Redding Police Department released the names of three officers involved in Friday’s fatal shooting of Ray Dakota Scholfield.

Officer Russ Veilleaux, an 11-year veteran, Officer Jason Rhoads, a 10-year veteran and Officer Josh Tracy, who has been with the Redding Police Department for one year, opened fire on Scholfield in the front yard of a home.

The three officers responded to a report of a disturbance at the home shortly before 2 a.m. Friday.

Officials said Scholfield was in the front yard and waved a large butcher knife at the officers when they arrived, prompting them to open fire.

Scholfield was shot multiple times and later pronounced dead.

Witnesses told the officers at the scene that Scholfield had stabbed another person, Sheriff’s officials said. They later found a man dead from multiple stab wounds inside the home.

The relationship between the men, if any, was not known.

The three officers have been placed on paid administrative leave per protocol.
