A man stopped Thursday on Interstate 80 near Truckee for a traffic violation was arrested and jailed on suspicion of drug trafficking after a police dog located 38 pounds of marijuana.

California Highway Patrol officers stopped a Dodge Charger driven by Eric Draffen, a 52-year-old New York resident, at 8:15 p.m. near the central Truckee off-ramp after observing a traffic violation.

While speaking to Draffen, an officer observed indicators of possible narcotics trafficking and called in the Truckee Police Department's dog, Trax, who is trained to locate drugs, and his handler to investigate.

Trax alerted on the vehicle, which was then searched and found to contain boxes with 31 heat-sealed plastic packages of processed marijuana, estimated to weigh 38 pounds and to have a street value of more than $100,000, according to the police report.

Draffen was booked into the Nevada County jail in Truckee on three felony counts of narcotics trafficking, possession and possession for sales.
