Sacramento Metro fire crews responded to reports of a fire inside a unit at the CubeSmart storage facility at 4950 Watt Avenue in North Highlands just after 12:30 p.m. yesterday.
Fire officials said a total of seven units were damaged by the fire, which spread quickly due to the layout of the structure. An additional 20 units and their contents were saved by firefighters.
Five trucks, four crews and one medic from the Sacramento Metro Fire Department and the Sacramento Fire Department battled the blaze. Arson Investigators determined that the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking material in one of the units.
No one was injured by the fire.
