Sacramento law enforcement gear up for holiday DUI patrols

Local law enforcement will be out in force over the July 4th weekend to patrol for drunk driving.

Local law enforcement will be out in force over the July 4th weekend to patrol for drunken driving.

All 17 Sacramento County law enforcement agencies are teaming up to form the “Avoid the 17” DUI Task Force. On July 4th, every agency will increase its staffing levels.

On the evening of July 3rd, the Sacramento Police Department will operate DUI and drivers’ license checkpoints from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. in the City of Sacramento. On the 5th, several agencies will man checkpoints from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in Sacramento.

The California Highway Patrol will operate the Independence Day Maximum Enforcement Period from 6 p.m. on July 3rd to 11:59 p.m. on July 6th. During this time, all available officers throughout the state will be deployed to enforce seatbelt, speeding and DUI laws.

During the 2013 Independence Day weekend, 56 people were killed in vehicle collisions in California. The California Highway Patrol arrested 1,500 people for driving under the influence.
