The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible homicide after a man was found fatally shot this morning in Penn Valley.

About 1 a.m. the Sheriff’s Office received a report of gunshots heard in the 10000 block of Goodenough Court in Penn Valley. Deputies responded to the area but were unable to locate anyone shooting.

A short time later, the original caller contacted the Sheriff’s Office and asked that a deputy check his property. Upon arrival, the deputy was directed to a greenhouse behind the main residence where a man was found lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s name has not been released.

The Sheriff’s Office’s major crimes unit and the California Department of Justice Crime Lab were called to investigate the scene. At this time, officials said, the case is being investigated as a homicide.
