Two young boys died Friday morning when the car in which they were riding struck a tree on Jefferson Boulevard south of Clarksburg.

Officer Joelle McChesney of the California Highway Patrol said the single-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m.

A 2004 Honda Civic was northbound on Jefferson Boulevard south of Central Avenue. For some reason, the driver turned the vehicle to the left, which caused the Honda to rotate as it traveled across the southbound traffic lane and onto the dirt shoulder where it struck a tree. Upon impact, the vehicle was severed in two.

A 2-year-old boy, who was in the rear seat, and a 5-year-old, who was in the front passenger seat, were ejected from the car. The driver, a 42-year-old woman, remained in the vehicle as the front portion came to rest near the tree.

McChesney said the two children were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were not released. The woman was transported by Calstar helicopter to Kaiser South Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the children were properly restrained within the vehicle. McChesney said there was a child safety seat, but it is not known whether it was being used.

The CHP reminds parents, guardians and caretakers that the rear seat is the safest location for children, and children that are required to be in child safety seats are required to be in the rear seat.

It is also important that the seats are properly installed. Anyone who is curious whether a child safety seat is properly installed can call a CHP office and schedule an appointment with a certified safety seat technician for a check as well as instruction on the proper use and installation.
