One person died and another was critically injured when their vehicle was rear-ended Thursday afternoon on Highway 50 in El Dorado Hills.
The crash occurred about 2:50 p.m. on westbound Highway 50, about a half-mile east of El Dorado Hills Boulevard.
Officer Quinn Cuthbertson of the California Highway Patrol said a couple in a silver 2014 Honda Civic were in the slow lane, traveling about 20 mph with their emergency flashers on, when a maroon 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup struck the rear of their vehicle. Cuthbertson said the passenger, a woman, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Honda, a man, suffered critical injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
The driver and sole occupant of the pickup sustained minor injuries.
Names of those involved in the crash have not been released.
Partial lane closures were in effect on westbound Highway 50 until about 5 p.m.
