Grass fire damages workshops, threatens homes in south Sacramento

Two workshop buildings were damaged and several homes were threatened by a grass fire Tuesday afternoon on a large parcel in south Sacramento, near Cosumnes River College.

Roberto Padilla, spokesman for the Sacramento Fire Department, said the fire was reported about 1:45 p.m. at Shasta Avenue and Bruceville Road. The fire captain en route saw the large plume of smoke and requested a second alarm, recognizing that this was a rural-type parcel within an urban setting. The quick response by a large number of firefighters was credited with containing the fire to between a half-acre and an acre, Padilla said.

Although two good-size workshops suffered significant damage, the property owner had created defensible space, which gave firefighters room to work and likely prevented damage to homes, Padilla said. He stressed that defensible space is important in protecting structures in urban areas as well as rural areas.

Sacramento city fire crews were assisted by firefighters from the Cosumnes River Fire Department, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District and the West Sacramento Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
