Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries Friday afternoon when a helicopter assisting with the annual Jeepers Jamboree crashed along the Rubicon Trail.

Four people were on board. A man with head injuries and a man with leg injuries were flown to a Reno hospital, according the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. Two other occupants were able to walk away from the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified of the crash about 1 p.m. Deputies assigned to the trail patrol arrived at the scene and confirmed that a helicopter was down near Buck Island Lake, approximately 7 miles from Loon Lake. This area is accessible only by modified four-wheel-drive vehicles, helicopters or on foot, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

A California Shock Trauma Air Rescue air ambulance crew responded to aid the injured.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft is an AS350D helicopter. An FAA website shows the registered owner is Heli-Flite Inc. of Riverside.

As of late Friday afternoon, the trail was closed and sheriff’s deputies were standing by the wreckage. The crash will be investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
