‘Person of interest’ in slaying along Elk Grove trail now accused of homicide

A man initially identified as a “person of interest” in the July 24 death of 75-year-old Xihao Huang on an Elk Grove walking trail has been arrested on suspicion of homicide in the case.
During the course of the investigation, Elk Grove police identified 21-year-old Kyle Smith, who had been taken into custody on an unrelated charge of violating conditions of his parole, as a person of interest. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant Friday, and police said the charge of homicide has been added to Smith’s booking sheet.
Police responded to the area of Whitelock Parkway and Bellaterra Drive at 12:54 p.m. July 24 after a man was discovered in a field and was not breathing. Officers determined that the victim, Huang, had been stabbed several times and was dead.
Police said family members had last seen Huang about 7 a.m., and grew concerned when he did not return home after what they assumed was a routine trip to look for recyclables.
