The defense rested today in the trial of four men accused of murder in the Dec. 14, 2010, death of an innocent woman who was killed by a stray bullet during a mid-day shootout in front of a south area barbershop.
Attorneys are scheduled to deliver their closing arguments Tuesday in the Sacramento Superior Court trial of Louis James Mitchell, 22, his brother Lonnie Orlando Mitchell Jr., 27, James Leo Carney III, 35, and Larry Dean Jones Jr., 32.
All four of them were armed and shooting, their lawyers agree, the day Monique Nelson, 30, used her body to shield her 2-year-old son from the flying bullets at the Fly Cuts & Styles barbershop. One of the bullets fatally struck her in the side. The four defendants claimed they fired self-defense.
