A 54-year-old man armed with a pistol was shot and killed by Sutter County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday afternoon when he reportedly charged deputies responding to a call at a Live Oak residence.

Deputies went to the home in the 4700 block of Broadway about 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report of an assault or attempted suicide, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

Deputies found a woman inside and a man, identified as Mark Jeffery Sharpe, armed with a pistol. Sheriff’s officials said deputies ordered Sharpe several times to move away from the weapon. When he failed to comply, authorities said, deputies deployed a Taser, which failed to stop the man.

Sharpe then charged the deputies and they shot him, sheriff’s officials said.

Sharpe, who lived at the Live Oak residence, was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies were not hurt.

In keeping with Sheriff’s Office policies, the deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

The Sutter County District Attorney’s Office will conduct the investigation with the assistance of the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The Sheriff’s Office will conduct a separate, administrative investigation into the shooting.
