Q: I was wondering if you had any information on what happened to the three people arrested in February in connection with the theft of mail in Elk Grove?
Jason, Elk Grove
A: Leonard Velasco, Joseph Ryan and Keri Southwood were arrested Feb. 12 in connection with more than 60 mailbox break-ins that had occurred in the Elk Grove area since Jan. 1.
They were accused of theft or receipt of stolen mail, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft and access device fraud.
Police and U.S postal authorities said Elk Grove had experienced an unusually large number of mailbox break-ins. Targeted were free-standing cluster boxes, which usually have about a dozen locked slots for individual homeowners and typically are in newer developments.
According to online court records, the three were indicted in June by a federal grand jury in Sacramento. They were arraigned June 10. Each pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. Their next court date, for a status conference, is set for Aug. 18.
