Q: Was the death of Peter Carl Johnson of Citrus Heights in 1990 ever resolved? If so, what happened and was anyone convicted?
Long Lost Friend, Elk Grove
A: This case is the subject of periodic queries from Ask Sacto 911 readers who remember the death of 28-year-old Peter Carl Johnson nearly 25 years ago.
It remains unsolved.
Johnson was found dead in the early morning of July 21, 1990 on the sidewalk in front of his Bonham Circle residence near Sunrise Boulevard in Citrus Heights. Sacramento County sheriff’s officials said he had been clubbed in the head. His watch and wallet were missing, leading authorities to believe that robbery was the motive.
According to stories in The Sacramento Bee, Johnson had once worked in the Sacramento office of Rep. Robert Matsui. He had left the job the previous summer when he was diagnosed with cancer. At the time of his death, his cancer was in remission and he was looking forward to starting an administrative job at UC Berkeley, where he graduated in 1985.
