An El Dorado County jail inmate who apparently hanged himself in his cell last month has been identified as 34-year-old Lawrence Spies.
Correctional officers at the county jail in Placerville were delivering dinner to inmates about 4:50 p.m. Sept. 19 when they found Spies with “an item” around his neck that was tied to a top bunk, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
Deputies cut the inmate free and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. El Dorado County fire personnel arrived and Spies was pronounced dead at 5:03 p.m. His name had been withheld pending notification of family.
Spies was in jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and making criminal threats.

Sheriff’s officials said the suspected suicide was being investigated by sheriff’s detectives, the county District Attorney’s Office and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
