A passenger died when the car in which he was riding Saturday slammed into another car stopped on Highway 99.
The California Highway Patrol said a Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound in the slow lane of Highway 99 south of Mack Road at an unknown speed about 4:15 a.m. Saturday.
The driver apparently did not see another car stopped in the same lane. The driver of the other car stopped to render aid to another vehicle on the right shoulder, according to a CHP news release.
The Toyota crashed into the rear of the car stopped in the slow lane.
A passenger in the Toyota was killed. He was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Kenny Nguyen, 23, of Elk Grove.
Three other people in the Toyota, including the driver, suffered moderate to major injuries. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence before being released to the hospital, according to the news release.
The driver of the car that was stopped on the highway suffered moderate injuries and his passenger suffered major injuries.
