Police detained a man Sunday night in connection to the stabbings of a homeless man and woman near a popular midtown Safeway supermarket, a police spokesman said.
With sirens blaring and a police helicopter circling, officers rushed to the area near 19th and R streets, where they said the male suspect stabbed the two victims under a bridge by light-rail tracks, said Sacramento police Officer Justin Brown.
The incident was reportedly unprovoked, although the exact cause is unknown and under investigation, Brown said.
The victims were rushed to an area hospital following the stabbing, Brown said. Their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening, he said.
On Oct. 12, Anna Marie Bernaix, a 54-year-old homeless woman, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head near south Sacramento railroad tracks. A 35-year-old homeless man who was sleeping near Cottonwood Lane and Elsie Avenue in Sacramento was found shot multiple times on July 10 and survived.
