Downtown Stockton lost its holiday centerpiece early Monday when a 35-foot artificial Christmas tree was destroyed by fire.
Connie Cochran, a spokeswoman for the Stockton city manager’s office, said the tree had been installed each holiday season for about the past 10 years at the Weber Point Event Center. The city held annual tree-lighting festivities there the first Saturday in December.
The fire was reported at 1:51 a.m. Monday. Cochran said fire officials suspect the cause was an electrical malfunction, because the fire started near the top of the tree.
Cochran said she did not know whether the city would install a new tree at the site next year.
