A San Francisco woman drowned Saturday afternoon in a rafting accident in the Kyburz area, according to an El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department press release.
Elaine Yi Mau, 32, was rafting in inner tubes with friends on the South Fork of the American River in the China Flat Campground area, the release said. After floating through some rapids, the group realized Mau had fallen in. Her friends called 911 at 4:09 p.m. Cal Fire, County Fire and sheriff’s deputies responded and began searching the area. They located her body at 4:45 p.m. submerged in a section of heavy rapids.
Recovery efforts began and Mau’s body was removed from the water. She was pronounced dead by paramedics at 6 p.m. The release said deputies haven’t determined if she was wearing a life jacket. El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit and the Coroner’s office are investigating the accident.
