Sacramento Police safely diffused a potentially violent situation Saturday after a man allegedly led them on a brief chase and then refused to exit his car.
Officers attempted to stop Andrew Jung for a traffic violation near Meadowview Road and 24th Street in south Sacramento just before noon, according to Officer Traci Trapani of the Sacramento Police Department.
Instead of stopping, the suspect led police on a slow-speed pursuit for a couple blocks to Meadowview and Tamoshanter Way, where he stopped his car and refused to get out.
“As it was unfolding, we received some information that he was possibly a subject who wanted to commit suicide by cop,” Officer Trapani said. “We never want it to escalate into that.”

Police hostage negotiators arrived on the scene and officers eventually shot two rounds of pepper balls, similar to pepper spray, into the car. The suspect was detained without injury to himself or officers around 1:30 p.m., shortly after police used the pepper spray, Officer Trapani said.
The suspect, who police described as being in his late 20s, was unarmed and no weapons were found in the vehicle. He faces charges of evading and resisting arrest.
