An online listing of compounding pharmacies shows 13 in Northern California in 2011, including eight in the Sacramento region – in Auburn, Davis, Grass Valley, Marysville, Placerville, Rocklin, Sacramento and Woodland.
In California, sterile compounding pharmacies are licensed by the California State Board of Pharmacy. Dan Wills, business manager of Grandpa's Compounding Pharmacy in Placerville, said California's regulations are among the nation's strictest.
Wills said last week that he had received an industry alert regarding meningitis cases on the East Coast. Although the Placerville pharmacy is licensed to prepare methylprednisolone acetate, Wills said his firm has chosen not to handle drugs that are injected into the spinal column due to the risk involved.
However, he said, it is important that some pharmacies provide such drugs because they can be critical to people who suffer unbearable pain without the injections.
