Anthem Blue Cross is poised to win another five-year contract to run CalPERS' preferred provider organization plan.
CalPERS' pension and health benefits committee Tuesday recommended Anthem – already running the program – for a new contract. The other finalist was Blue Shield of California. The PPO program serves 357,000 CalPERS members.
"It was a tough decision because both Anthem and Blue Shield's responses were very good in terms of meeting our requirements," said committee chair Priya Mathur in a press release.
The committee's recommendation must be ratified by the full CalPERS board, which meets today. The new contract takes effect next Jan. 1.
