Kevin Hines swears he’ll never do again what turned him into a well-known activist for mental health awareness.

Trying to end his life, Hines jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. He’s one of the fortunate few who survived.

Hines will talk about his journey from despair to fulfillment as a globe-trotting advocate for suicide prevention on Wednesday at the Crest Theatre at 10th and K streets in Sacramento.

He’s hosting the premiere of the documentary “A Choice to Heal – Mental Health in California,” starring actress Mariel Hemingway, who addresses the history of mental illness in her own family. Hemingway’s famous grandfather, author, Ernest Hemingway, committed suicide. The film examines novel ways in which California is tackling mental health problems and solutions for its residents.

The free showing at the Crest will begin at 6 p.m. and the documentary will air on CBS stations in California on May 31. Cities carrying the broadcast will be Sacramento, Fresno, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Hines’ story of resilience begins with his choice to jump from the bridge in 2000. He now reaches millions of people as he travels the globe spreading his message about suicide prevention, early intervention and mental health awareness. His book, “Cracked Not Broken,” is in its 13th printing.

Reservations are required for the event, which is open to the public. RSVPs go to the state’s Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission through Jennifer Whitney at jennifer.whitney@mhsoac.ca.gov.

Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, will make opening remarks. Following the documentary, producer Joyce Mitchell, an Emmy Award winner, will talk about insights she gained while pulling together the half-hour documentary. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase at the event.
