Peter and Mary Steinert rolled up to the Sacramento Zoo's Twilight Thursdays car show in their newly restored 1956 Nash Ambassador Custom. They had never heard of the series of car shows until recently.

"This guy pulled up behind me when I drove into a friend's driveway," said Peter Steinert. "He gave me this flier for the show and told me he wanted me to come."

Twilight Thursdays features a different theme each week, and Thursday night's theme was cars from the '40s and '50s, and vintage trailers.

The Steinerts came dressed for the theme – Mary's bow, lipstick, and underskirt ruffles matching the car. They had chosen the bright pink color from the original American Motors catalog to keep it as authentic as possible. Most of the original car remains, resealed and renewed by Peter Steinert.

" '50s cars are the best," he said. "They run well and still have lots of character, that classy look."

Peter Steinert had always been fascinated with cars and learned on his own how to fix and tinker with them. He retired recently and started working on restorations, said his wife. "This is his hobby," she said. "I just support him."
