A ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of an airplane crash into a south Sacramento ice cream parlor that killed 22 people is scheduled Sunday.

The ceremony in remembrance of the victims who died in the 1972 crash into the Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor across Freeport Boulevard from Executive Airport will take place at 1 p.m.

The ceremony at a memorial commemorating the day is being conducted by the Firefighters Burn Institute and the city of Sacramento. The memorial site is at the police and fire department headquarters, 5770 Freeport Blvd.

The tragedy occurred Sept. 24, 1972, when an old war jet failed on takeoff from the airport during an air show.
