Firefighters report that they are making progress on a wildfire in a heavily forested area near the Nevada County community of Alta Sierra, which has forced the evacuation of dozens of homes.
The 250-acre blaze started just after 2 p.m., said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The wildfire is burning near Dog Bar Road and Taylor Crossing Road, just east of Alta Sierra and about one mile west of Colfax. The fire was 20 percent contained at 10 p.m.
“The fire is in heavy timber and that makes it difficult for us to fight because there’s so much fuel to burn,” Berlant said.

The fire is being fought on the ground and from the air, Berlant said.
“We have a lot of resources involved,” he said.
Two homes and three outbuildings have been destroyed in the blaze. All evacuations were lifted at 10 p.m. Saturday, Berlant reported.
