Temperatures rose to 106 degrees in Sacramento Sunday afternoon, breaking an almost 75-year-old record.
The last record-high for June 18 was 105 degrees, set in 1945.
The record-high temperature was recorded by the National Weather Service around 3:45 p.m. By about 4:30 p.m., it dipped slightly to 105 degrees but climbed back to 106 by the evening. While plenty hot, the weather service had projected the day’s high temperature could have reached 108 degrees.
Neighboring cities also felt the record-breaking heat on Sunday in full force – Redding, Red Bluff and Chico experienced highs between 109 and 111 degrees. Closer to Sacramento, Stockton and Yuba City had temperatures reaching 108 degrees.
The NWS extended its excessive heat warning throughout the interior of Northern California area to remain in effect through Thursday night.
In Sacramento, the NWS estimates high temperatures are estimated to be in the triple-digits through Friday, with highs on Monday and Thursday projected to reach 107 degrees.
Those estimates are in line with projections for elsewhere in the valley. Temperatures are expected to be between 105 to 110 degrees on Monday, then 102 to 110 degrees through Thursday. Overnight lows will be in the 70s until Monday, then mid 60s to mid 70s through the middle of the week, according to the NWS.
As part of the NWS’s warning, residents are advised to drink lots of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, keep out of the sun and regularly check up on family and neighbors. Outdoor activities like mowing the lawn and exercise should be done early in the morning or during the evening.
