A wet three-day weekend is forecast, with a series of storms lined up to bring rain to the Sacramento region and snow to the Sierra.
Rainfall in the Sacramento region was light for the 24-hour-period ending at 5 p.m. Friday. Downtown Sacramento received 0.03 inches, while 0.01 inches was reported at Sacramento International Airport and 0.02 inches at Executive Airport, said Nathan Owen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The season total for the Sacramento area to date is 6.06 inches, about 2 inches less than the normal 8.05 inches, he said.
Another storm system, anticipated late Friday night, also was expected to result in relatively light rainfall. A stronger system moving in late Sunday and continuing into Monday will likely bring heavier rain, Owen said.
Forecasts for the three-day weekend indicate the Sacramento area could receive 1 to 2 inches of rain through Monday. In the Sierra, areas such as Kingvale are expected to receive 2 to 3 inches of snow, while higher elevations could see 8 to 12 inches through Monday, Owen said.
The National Weather Service warned of possible travel headaches over the Sierra passes Saturday due to snow-covered and icy roads.
A high temperature of 55 degrees is forecast for the Sacramento area Saturday, with highs in the upper 50s Sunday and Monday. Lows are expected to be in the upper 40s.
In the Sierra, the forecast for areas such as Truckee calls for daytime highs in the low 40s and overnight lows in the upper 20s.
