An overnight weather system delivered less than a tenth of an inch of rain to the Sacramento area, but snowed hard enough to bring chain controls to the Sierra.
Conditions were drying out Thursday after showers exited. The little rainstorm made the roads wet for the morning commute from Auburn to Elk Grove:
Auburn: 0.28 of an inch
Folsom Lake: 0.04
Elk Grove: 0.03
In the Sierra, heavy snow fell overnight from around Blue Canyon eastward on Interstate 80, according to the National Weather Service. Blowing snow was reported on Highway 20 by Caltrans.
While chains were required on Highway 50 and I-80 earlier in the day, controls were lifted by 8 a.m. Snow showers will linger through the day but the heaviest snowfall has shifted to the southeast, according to the NWS.
Look for a big warm-up over the weekend into the 80s.
