After the season’s first day of triple digit temperatures, highs in the Sacramento area dropped into the upper 90s Wednesday.
Downtown Sacramento recorded a high of 98 degrees, said Idamis Del Valle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Sacramento International Airport reported a high of 97 degrees, and Sacramento Executive Airport, 95 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to top out in the upper 90s again Thursday before edging back into the low 100s Friday and Saturday, Del Valle said.
The normal this time of year, when a high pressure system is not trapping hot air over the valley like a pressure cooker lid, is 84 degrees.
The National Weather Service issued a “special weather statement” Wednesday, urging people to be alert to heat-related illness and cold water safety concerns as the hot weather draws people to lakes and rivers.
In anticipation of 100-degree temperatures, the city of Rancho Cordova announced that City Hall, at 2729 Prospect Park Drive, will serve as a cooling center from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Signs will direct people to the cooling center room. Complimentary water and snacks will be provided, and movies will be available for viewing.
