Eric Chavez, a six-time Gold Glove third baseman for the A's, will begin a rehabilitation assignment with the River Cats tonight against Salt Lake at Raley Field.
Chavez's appearance in the opener of an eight-game homestand marks his first at home as a River Cat. Chavez, 30, did a rehab stint with Sacramento in 2004, but all three games were in Fresno.
Chavez went on the 15-day disabled list March 25 following offseason back surgery and was moved to the 60-day DL on April 24. The 10-year veteran was limited by back trouble to a career-low 90 games last season. He's a career .269 hitter with 227 home runs and 762 RBIs.
