Re "IRS refunds billions to ID thieves" (Business, Nov. 8): The Internal Revenue Service has a difficult problem to solve with so many returns filed electronically. This past May, my wife received a letter from the IRS informing her that her refund was being reviewed. She was upset at first, but I told her she hadn't filed a return in 57 years as we have always filed a joint return.
I contacted the fraud office of the IRS and reported the situation. The agent said the problem is huge and difficult to stop due to electronically filing of returns, direct deposits of refunds and ID thefts. He said the IRS loses billions of dollars to this scheme every year and is doing everything it can to solve this problem. -- Donald Briggs, Sacramento
